UN Asks Serbia to Stop Abuse

17 July 2008. The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) today issued a request to the Serbian government to stop “torture or ill-treatment” of children with disabilities in institutional care in the form of sever long-term restraint and seclusion. The action of the committee was in response to an MDRI (Mental Disabilities Rights International) report on the deplorable conditions of Serbian institutional care.

In response to the UNICEF action, the Serbian Government has signed an agreement promising to radically downsize Serbian institutions. For more info, see the MDRI website or the MDRI YouTube Channel.
